Fox Factory Recalls Mountain Bike Rear Shock Absorbers Due to Fall Hazards
Fox Factory is recalling about 6,100 mountain bike rear shock absorbers because the outer sleeve can rupture, posing a fall and injury hazard.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (fall and injury hazard) where the source text explicitly states that no injuries have been reported, which aligns with the 'High' severity criteria.
Plain-English summary
Fox Factory is recalling approximately 6,100 model year 2016 and some 2017 FLOAT X2 mountain bike rear shock absorbers. The recall involves shocks sold individually and those installed as original equipment on full-suspension mountain bikes and frames from brands including YT, Giant, Pivot, Intense, Ibis, Scott, Trek, GT, Knolly, Norco, Rocky Mountain, Diamondback, Morpheus, Foes Racing, Orbea, and Canyon. An additional 1,200 units were sold in Canada.
The recall is due to a defect where the shock absorber's outer sleeve can rupture. This rupture allows the sleeve to come into contact with other bicycle parts or the rider, creating a fall and injury hazard. Fox Factory has received seven reports of the outer sleeve rupturing, but no injuries have been reported.
The affected shocks were sold from March 2015 through September 2016 at independent bike stores nationwide and online retailers such as Jenson USA, Pro Bike Supply, Universal Cycles, and Go-ride.com. They were sold as original equipment on bikes priced between $2,700 and $10,000, or individually as an aftermarket accessory for about $600. Consumers should immediately stop using bicycles with the recalled shocks and return them to the place of purchase for a free repair. Those unable to return the item should contact Fox for instructions.
