What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (strangulation hazard) where injury has not yet been reported in the United States, fitting the High severity criteria.
Plain-English summary
IKEA North America Services LLC is recalling approximately 11,000 children's LATTJO bat cape costumes sold in the United States. The recall also includes 750 units sold in Canada. The capes are black with gray stripes, made of 100% polyester, and measure 30 inches long by 57 inches wide. They feature a fabric hook and loop fastener closure at the neck. The products were sold at IKEA stores nationwide and online from November 2015 through February 2016 for about $13.
The recall was issued because the fabric hook and loop fastener at the neck of the bat cape can fail to detach readily during use, posing a strangulation hazard to children. IKEA has received three reports from outside the United States of the fastener failing to detach and scratching children's necks.
Consumers should immediately take the recalled bat capes away from children and return them to any IKEA store for a full refund. For more information, consumers can contact IKEA toll-free at 888-966-4532 or visit the Product Recalls section of the IKEA USA website.
