IKEA Recalls Children's Bed Canopies Due to Strangulation Hazard

IKEA is recalling children's bed canopies because the mesh fabric poses a strangulation hazard to infants and young children.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a strangulation hazard with nine reported incidents of children getting entangled, including one in the U.S. involving a 7-month-old, which meets the criteria for significant injury reports.

Plain-English summary

IKEA North America Services LLC is recalling approximately 255,000 children's bed canopies in the United States, 7,000 in Canada, and 2.6 million worldwide. The recalled canopies are made of mesh fabric, measure about 7 feet long and 2 feet in diameter, and hang from the ceiling onto a child's crib or bed. The recall involves eleven specific models, including BARNSLIG Boll, FABLER, HIMMEL (Blue, Blue/White, Green, and Pink), KLÄMMIG, LEGENDARISK, MINNEN Bed Canopy Set, MINNEN Brodyr, and TISSLA.

The recall is being issued because an infant or young child can get entangled at the neck in the canopy's fabric, posing a strangulation hazard. There have been nine reports worldwide of children getting entangled in the bed canopies, including one in the U.S. involving a 7-month-old girl who pulled the canopy's fabric into her crib and wrapped it around her neck several times.

These canopies were sold at IKEA stores nationwide and online at www.ikea-usa.com from August 1996 through March 2014 for between $10 and $30. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled children's bed canopies and return them to any IKEA store for a full refund. For more information, consumers can contact IKEA toll-free at (888) 966-4532 anytime or visit www.ikea-usa.com and click on the recall link at the top of the page.
