Plain-English summary
IKEA of Sweden is recalling approximately 2.9 million children's wall-mounted lamps in the United States, 1.1 million in Canada, and 23 million worldwide. The recalled products are from the SMILA series and include eight designs: blue star (STJÄRNA), yellow moon (MÅNE), pink flower (BLOMMA), white flower (BLOMMA), red heart (HJÄRTA), green bug (BAGGE), blue seashell (SNÄCKA), and orange seahorse (SJÖHÄST). These lamps were sold at IKEA stores, in catalogs, and online from July 1999 through May 2013 for between $10 and $13.
The recall is due to a strangulation hazard. The lamp's 7-foot electrical cord can be pulled into a crib by an infant, allowing the child to become entangled. CPSC reports that a 16-month-old child in a crib died after getting entangled in the lamp's cord. In a separate incident, a 15-month-old child in a crib became entangled in the cord and nearly strangled. Both incidents occurred in Europe.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled lamp and contact IKEA for a free repair kit. The lamp should not be used until the repair kit is installed. The kit includes self-adhesive fasteners for attaching the lamp's cord to the wall and safety instructions. Consumers can contact IKEA toll-free at (888) 966-4532 or visit www.ikea-usa.com for more information.
