Plain-English summary
Hearth & Home Technologies of Lakeville, Minn., is recalling about 2,000 Quadra-Fire Mt. Vernon E2 pellet stoves and inserts. The recall involves specific model numbers printed on the unit rating plate, including MMTV-E2-PBK, MTV-E2-CSB, MTV-E2-MBK, MTV-E2-PDB, MTV-E2-PFT, MTV-E2-PMH for stoves, and MTV1-E2-CSB, MTV1-E2-MBK, MTV1-E2-PMH for inserts. The stoves are cast iron units approximately 32 inches high, 28 inches wide, and 29 inches deep, available in matte black, sienna bronze, porcelain mahogany, or porcelain black finishes. The inserts are approximately 34 inches wide, 24 inches high, and 15 inches deep, with a 21-inch by 14-inch viewing area.
The recall is due to a laceration hazard. Fuel can back up in the units, creating unstable combustion and pressure build-up inside the firebox. This pressure can cause the glass to break. The firm has received eight reports of glass breaking, but no injuries have been reported.
The recalled units were sold at stove stores from February 2014 through January 2015 for about $4,000. Consumers should stop using the unit, turn the small blue dial on the stove or insert to the -4 position, and follow the daily maintenance requirements in the owner's manual. They should contact the retailer where the unit was purchased to arrange for free installation of an enhanced control board. The firm's dealers are also contacting known purchasers. For more information, consumers can contact Hearth & Home Technologies at (800) 883-6690 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or visit www.hearthnhome.com and click on "Notices".
