Cree Recalls LED T8 Lamps Due to Overheating and Burn Hazard

Cree Inc. is recalling approximately 700,000 Cree LED T8 replacement lamps sold in the United States and 11,500 in Canada. The recall involves white, cylindrical 48-inch lamps used indoors to replace traditional two-pin T8 fluorescent tubes. The affected units are marked as "BT848 Series Lamp" with specific product part numbers and date codes printed on the lamp or its packaging.

The lamps are being recalled because electrical arcing may cause them to overheat and melt, which poses a burn hazard. Cree has received four reports of the lamps overheating and melting, but no injuries have been reported. The lamps were sold at The Home Depot nationwide and to commercial lighting customers through electrical distributors from August 2014 through April 2015 for about $22 per tube.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled lamps, disconnect or switch off the fixture, remove the lamp, and place it in a safe location.
