Burley Recalls Tailwind Bicycle Racks for Trailercycles Due to Fall Hazard
Burley Design is recalling Tailwind bicycle racks for trailercycles because the top portion can break, causing the trailercycle to disconnect and posing a fall hazard.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported (one minor leg injury in the U.S. and one broken leg in the UK), but no deaths or FDA Class I classification is present, fitting the 'High' criteria for injury reports without fatalities.
Plain-English summary
Burley Design LLC is recalling approximately 4,150 Tailwind bicycle racks for trailercycles in the U.S. and 17 in Canada. The aluminum racks are used to hitch children's trailercycles to adult-sized bicycles. The top portion of the rack, which connects the trailercycle to the towing bicycle, can break and allow the trailercycle to disconnect, posing a fall hazard.
The firm received 11 reports of Tailwind Racks breaking, including one report of a minor leg injury in the U.S. and one report of a broken leg in the UK. The racks were sold individually in black or silver, or with Kazoo and Piccolo brand trailercycles in black only, from November 2011 through September 2013. Individual racks sold for $65, while trailercycles with racks sold for $300 and $350 respectively.
Consumers should stop using the Tailwind Racks immediately and contact Burley to receive a free replacement rack. Burley will replace the recalled racks with a steel Moose Rack. Consumers can contact Burley Design at (800) 311-5294 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday or online at www.burley.com.
