Plain-English summary

Emerson Air Comfort Products, a division of Emerson Electric Co., is recalling approximately 2,800 Tommy Bahama brand 52-inch outdoor ceiling fans in the United States and 80 in Canada. The recall involves the "The Copa Breeze" style fans with model number TB311DBZ and a distressed bronze color. These fans were sold at fan and lighting stores nationwide and online at EmersonFans.com and Amazon.com from April 2010 through July 2012 for about $350.

The hazard exists because the brackets holding the fan blades can break, causing the blades to fall and posing a risk of injury to bystanders. Emerson Air Comfort has received three reports of fan blades detaching, including one report of a laceration to a consumer who was hit in the back of the head by a falling blade.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled fans and contact Emerson Air Comfort Products to schedule a free in-home repair or to order a free do-it-yourself repair kit. To determine if a fan is affected, check the three-letter date code on the label on the top of the motor housing; affected codes include AJL, BAA, BAB, BAC, BAD, BAE, BAF, BAG, BAH, BAI, BAJ, BAK, BAL, BBA, BBB, BBC, BBD, BBE, BBF, BBG, BBH, BBI, BBJ, BBK, BBL, BCA, BCB, BCC, and BCD.
