What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk of serious injury (falling fan, electrical shock) with one reported laceration, fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has been reported but is not classified as severe/critical by the agency.

Plain-English summary

The Air Comfort Products Division of Emerson Electric Co. is recalling approximately 20,000 ceiling fan installation kits in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The affected kits are model CF10N1, designed for use with Emerson fans installed on sloped ceilings or in a "close to the ceiling" mode. The kits were sold in five colors (brown, polished brass, antique brass, white, and antique white) from December 1984 through December 1989 for about $20 at lighting showrooms, electrical distributors, and hardware stores.

The recall is due to a defect where the bracket holding the fan can fail over time. This failure can cause the fan to fall or hang by its electric wires, posing a risk of injury to bystanders and an electrical shock hazard from exposed wires. Emerson Electric is aware of 12 reports of bracket failures resulting in falling fans. One incident involved a 13-year-old boy who suffered a laceration on the nose from a falling ceiling fan.

Consumers should immediately stop using ceiling fans installed with these kits and check if their fan housing has a two-piece canopy. Air Comfort will help consumers identify if their fans are part of the recall and provide installation or repair if needed. To verify if a fan is affected or to receive a repair kit, consumers should call Air Comfort at (877) FAN KITS between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday.
