Dive Rite Wings Recalled Due to Drowning Hazard from Valve Failure

Dive Rite is recalling approximately 16,000 Dive Rite Wings buoyancy compensator devices. The affected models include Travel, Venture, Rec, Trek, Classic, Nomad, and Super Wings. These wings were sold in red, blue, or black and feature an opaque white or blue tinted bladder with welded-in flanges. Wings with black bladders are not affected. The affected units have serial numbers ranging from 42000 through 72000, which can be found on a white tag attached along a seam of the wing.

The overpressure valve springs in the diving equipment could rust and fail, allowing the buoyancy compensator devices to leak. This failure poses a drowning hazard to divers. No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall.

The affected wings were sold nationwide through diving equipment retailers and distributors from June 2006 through October 2008 for about $359. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled diving equipment and return it to an authorized distributor or dealer for a free replacement of the overpressure valve spring.
