Custom Buoyancy Inc. (CBI) is recalling approximately 7,700 overpressure valves (OPVs) used in scuba diving buoyancy control systems. The recalled valves are installed on systems sold under the brand names Diving Unlimited International (DUI), International Divers, Ocean Management Systems, Rip Tide, and Steam Machines. These systems are available in jacket and wings styles and were sold nationwide by authorized CBI distributors from October 2000 through November 2001 for approximately $590.

The recall is being issued because the overpressure valve can stick in the open position, which poses a drowning hazard to divers. CPSC and CBI have received three reports of the valves sticking open, but no injuries have been reported. The recall includes units with date codes from October 2000 through June 2001, which are printed on an instructional label sewn to the buoyancy control system. Valves with an asterisk below the serial number are not involved in this recall.

Consumers should stop using the buoyancy control systems with these overpressure valves immediately. They should contact the CBI dealer where the product was purchased to obtain a free replacement valve.
