Plain-English summary
QVC, Inc. is recalling approximately 11,100 Red Devil gas grills sold between May 1999 and December 2000. The grills, which feature a red metal tripod stand and a "Red Devil" logo, were sold for approximately $150. The recall is due to a design defect that allows consumers to light the grill at the air intake tube instead of the burner. When lit at the air intake, the tube can reach temperatures of up to 750 degrees Fahrenheit, creating a significant burn hazard. Additionally, the heat can damage the plastic support piece, causing the grill to collapse and potentially ignite surrounding combustibles.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has received 44 reports of consumers suffering burns to legs, hands, and fingers, including some third-degree burns. No incidents have been reported by QVC customers specifically.
Consumers who purchased these grills from QVC should stop using them immediately. They should call QVC Customer Service at (800) 334-9324 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, or visit www.qvc.com. Customers who purchased the product after August 1998 will receive revised operating instructions and a warning label to be placed on the locking mechanism next to the air hole.
