Red Devil Gas Grills Recalled Due to Burn and Fire Hazards
CPSC and HSN are recalling Red Devil Gas Grills because lighting them at the air intake tube can cause the grill to collapse, leading to burns and fires.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves significant injury reports, specifically 44 instances of burns including third-degree burns, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating.
Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and HSN are recalling approximately 13,750 Red Devil Gas Grills. These red metal grills, which feature a tripod stand and a "Red Devil" logo, were sold by HSN from September 1998 to May 2001 for up to $145.95.
The recall is due to a design defect that allows consumers to light the grill at the air intake tube instead of the burner. When lit at the air intake, the tube can reach temperatures of up to 750 degrees Fahrenheit, melting the plastic support piece. Grills manufactured before August 1998 may collapse during use, causing flames to burn nearby consumers and ignite surrounding combustibles. Manufacturers have received 44 reports of consumers suffering burns to legs, hands, and fingers, including some third-degree burns.
Consumers who purchased these grills from HSN prior to December 31, 1998, should return them to HSN Quality Assurance in St. Petersburg, Florida, for a full refund. Those who purchased the grills after January 1, 1999, will receive revised operating instructions and warning labels to be placed on the locking mechanism next to the air hole.
