Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling John Deere Gas Barbecue Grills, specifically models HR-BG6203 and HR-BG5202. These grills were manufactured by Onward Manufacturing in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, and imported by Mi-T-M Corporation in Peosta, Iowa. Approximately 3,100 units were sold at John Deere dealers from March 2006 through August 2006 for approximately $600 (HR-BG6203) or $500 (HR-BG5202).
The recall is due to fire and burn hazards. Operating the grill in windy conditions can cause flames to blow under the control panel, leading to overheating or flashbacks. This can damage the gas supply hose, resulting in an uncontrolled flame, or cause the control knobs to overheat, posing a risk of burns to the user's hands. Mi-T-M Corporation has received one report of a minor burn from a user touching an overheated control knob.
Consumers should stop using these grills immediately. To identify the recalled models, look for the model number on the CSA approval sticker on the back panel, a John Deere symbol on the center of the hood, and a John Deere decal plate below the control panel. Affected consumers should contact Mi-T-M Corp. toll-free at (877) 535-5336 or their John Deere dealer to receive a free repair kit.
