What this means for you
Our assessment, not the agency’s: severity 3/5 (High).
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk of fire and gas leakage, which are significant hazards, but the source explicitly states there have been no reports of injuries, fitting the High severity criterion for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Sunbeam Products Inc. is recalling approximately 80,000 Grillmaster gas grills with side burners in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recalled grills are black and feature a side burner for cooking. The hazard involves the side burner's propane gas hose, which can twist up toward the aluminum casting of the grill. This positioning can cause the hose to overheat and melt, leading to gas leakage or a fire.
Sunbeam received one consumer complaint regarding a replacement hose damaged by heat from the grill casting. There have been no reports of injuries associated with these grills. The affected model numbers are 56GR8, 560R8, 562D1, 562D9, GC548517, GG546517, GS544417, GS544717, GS546517, GG546537, and GG547517. These model numbers are located on the identification label on the back of the grill, as well as on the assembly instructions and parts list.
The grills were sold nationwide from 1996 through July 1998 for approximately $200 to $250 at mass merchandise stores including Bradlees, Caldor, the Home Depot, Service Merchandise, and Wal-Mart. Consumers should stop using the recalled grills immediately and call Sunbeam toll-free at (800) 200-2300 to receive a free retrofit kit. The kit contains a wire bracket guard and instructions to correctly position the propane gas hose.
