Plain-English summary
Achim Importing Co. is voluntarily recalling more than 249,000 oval braided rugs in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recalled products, including single rugs and three-rug sets, fail to meet federal mandatory standards for flammability. While small rugs under 24 square feet are permitted to be sold if they carry a specific flammability warning label, most of the recalled rugs lacked this required label. Rugs larger than 24 square feet that do not meet the standard are prohibited from sale.
The rugs were sold nationwide between January 1997 and June 1997 at retailers including Walmart, Family Dollar, Dollar General, Woolworths, and other independent stores. Single rugs measured approximately 20 by 30 inches or 30 by 50 inches and sold for about $4 to $5. Three-rug sets, sold primarily at Walmart for about $50, included one large rug measuring 54 by 90 inches and two smaller rugs. The products were manufactured in China and feature multi-color braids in shades such as Wedgwood blue, burgundy, hunter green, gray, and tan.
CPSC and Achim are not aware of any injuries involving these rugs, but the recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of burn injuries from readily ignitable materials. Consumers should stop using the large rugs immediately and remove all rugs from areas close to sources of ignition, such as fireplaces and stoves. Consumers may return the entire set or individual small rugs to the store of purchase for a full refund, or keep the small rugs and obtain appropriate caution labels from Achim by calling (800) 542-2446.
