Plain-English summary

Spin Master Toys, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is recalling approximately 137,000 Firestormer and Skyblazer air-powered toy planes. The recall is due to a defect where the plastic air intake chamber can burst, throwing plastic pieces that pose a laceration, bruise, and abrasion hazard to consumers. The Firestormer plane is red or blue with a flame graphic, while the Skyblazer is purple, green, and white. Both are recommended for children 8 years and older and feature an 8-digit date code on the bottom of the pump. Only planes with date codes ranging from 12/29/01-KS through 03/24/02-KS are included in the recall.

The planes were sold nationwide at hobby shops and department stores, including Wal-Mart, Toys R Us, Target, and K-mart, between January 2002 and May 20, 2002, for about $20. Spin Master Toys has received seven reports of Firestormer planes bursting, including four reports of injuries to children. These injuries included a chest abrasion, a cut leg, a bruised shoulder, and ringing in the ears. There have been no reports of injuries involving the Skyblazer planes.

Consumers should stop using the planes immediately and contact Spin Master Toys to receive a free replacement plane. The company can be reached at (800) 622-8339 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, or via their website at www.spinmaster.com.
