Volvo VNL and VNR Trucks Automatic High Beam Lighting Failure Recall

Volvo Trucks is recalling certain 2024–2026 VNL and 2026 VNR trucks because their automatic high beam headlights may fail to switch to low beam, violating federal lighting standards and increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The source text identifies a structural vehicle lighting defect that increases crash risk and violates a federal motor vehicle safety standard. No injuries or deaths are reported, but the hazard is direct and non-theoretical, warranting a High severity classification.

Plain-English summary

Volvo Trucks North America is recalling certain 2025–2026 Volvo VNL trucks and 2026 Volvo VNR trucks. The automatic high beam (AHB) feature may not switch to low beam headlights as intended due to a software issue in the lighting control module.

These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, which governs lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment. High beam headlights that do not switch to low beam as designed can reduce visibility for oncoming traffic, increasing the risk of a crash.

As an interim action, Volvo Trucks will update vehicle software over-the-air (OTA) at no cost to disable the AHB feature. Interim owner notification letters were mailed January 7, 2026. A final remedy is under development, with additional letters expected around June 1, 2026. Owners may contact Volvo Trucks customer service at 800-528-6586. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning November 19, 2025. Volvo Trucks' internal recall number is RVXX2511.
