New Flyer Recalls Transit Buses Due to High Voltage Battery Fire Risk

New Flyer is recalling 2019-2025 XE35, XE40, and XE60 transit buses because a high voltage battery short circuit may cause a fire. Owners should park outside and limit charging to 75%.

NHTSA safety advisory

Park this vehicle outside

NHTSA advises parking it away from buildings and other vehicles until the repair is done — the risk exists even when the vehicle is switched off.

This is the agency’s own advisory, not our assessment. Contact the manufacturer or a dealer, and see the official NHTSA notice for the current guidance.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (high voltage battery short circuit) that increases the risk of fire, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury/property-damage reports or structural defects.

Plain-English summary

New Flyer of America, Inc. is recalling certain 2019 XE35, 2021-2025 XE35, XE40, and XE60 transit buses. The recall involves a total of 655 vehicles. The defect is a potential short circuit within the high voltage battery module that can occur when the battery is charged to near or full capacity.

A short circuit in the high voltage battery increases the risk of a fire. To mitigate this risk, owners are advised to park the vehicles outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Additionally, owners should avoid charging the vehicles above 75% capacity.

New Flyer will replace the batteries free of charge. This is a phased campaign with owner notifications scheduled between March 2026 and September 2027. Interim owner notification letters explaining the safety risk were mailed on November 12, 2025. A second letter will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact New Flyer's customer service at 1-800-241-2947.
