School bus parking brake can release while wheelchair lift is deployed

International is recalling certain 2025-2026 IC Bus CESB school buses because the parking brake can be released while the wheelchair platform lift is deployed, failing FMVSS 403.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: Rubric level 4 covers structural vehicle defects: the parking brake can disengage while a passenger is on the lift, allowing the bus to move when it must be held stationary.

Plain-English summary

International Motors, LLC is recalling certain 2025-2026 IC Bus CESB school buses. Seven vehicles are potentially affected.

The parking brake can be released when the wheelchair platform lift is deployed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 403, "Platform Lift Systems".

NHTSA states that a bus that moves while the platform lift is in operation increases the risk of injury.
