2022 Ford Escape Software Defect May Cause Unexpected Loss of Drive Power
Ford is recalling 2022 Escape vehicles and certain Maverick and Corsair models due to HPCM software that may unexpectedly shift the vehicle into neutral, causing loss of drive power and increasing crash risk. Dealers will reprogram the software at no cost.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This involves a structural powertrain defect that can cause immediate loss of drive power while driving, significantly increasing crash risk. Per the rubric, structural vehicle defects are rated Severe (4) regardless of whether incidents have been reported.
Plain-English summary
Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2022 Ford Escape vehicles, along with 2022-2024 Maverick trucks and 2021-2022 Lincoln Corsair vehicles. These vehicles were previously repaired under recall 24V-330 but received incorrect repairs. The Hybrid Powertrain Control Module (HPCM) in affected vehicles may contain defective software.
The HPCM software can malfunction and cause the vehicle to shift unexpectedly into neutral while driving. When this occurs, the vehicle loses drive power immediately, which significantly increases the risk of a crash or loss of vehicle control. The recall was initiated following a report received on February 28, 2025.
Ford dealers will reprogram the HPCM software free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 11, 2025. Owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 (Ford recall number 25S16) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 (TTY 888-275-9171) for additional information or to schedule service.
