What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a defect in a critical vehicle safety system (curtain air bags) that reduces occupant protection during crashes. While the source reports no injuries to date, the potential for serious injury or death in actual crash events is significant. This qualifies as a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Toyota and Lexus are recalling certain 2024 vehicles due to a defect in the driver and passenger curtain side air bags. Specifically affected are 2024 Lexus TX350, TX500 Hybrid, TX550 Hybrid+, and Toyota Grand Highlander and Grand Highlander Hybrid models. The curtain side air bags may not unroll as intended and could partially deploy outside of an open window.
This defect violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 226 for ejection mitigation. Improper deployment of the side curtain air bags can reduce occupant protection during a crash, increasing the risk of injury to occupants.
Approximately 145,254 vehicles are affected. Owners should determine if their vehicle is affected and contact a dealer. Dealers will replace the driver and passenger curtain shield air bag assemblies free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on November 4, 2024.
