The rearview camera image may be obstructed by a trailer parking assist message, reducing rearward visibility and increasing crash risk. An over-the-air software update will fix the issue.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This defect increases crash risk by obstructing rear visibility, meeting the criteria for a High severity recall. However, no crashes or injuries have been reported, preventing a higher classification.

Plain-English summary

Hyundai Motor America is recalling certain 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles due to a rear visibility defect. The rearview camera image may be obstructed by a trailer parking assist message, which impairs the camera display and reduces visibility when backing up.

This defect causes the vehicle to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111, which requires adequate rear visibility. The obstruction increases the risk of a crash or injury when backing the vehicle.

Approximately 18,206 vehicles are affected. Hyundai will release an over-the-air (OTA) software update to fix the issue. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning May 31, 2024. Affected owners can contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 (Hyundai recall #258) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
