What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a known defect in a critical safety system with potential for serious harm in a crash. Per the severity rubric, risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported warrant a High classification.

Plain-English summary

Subaru of America, Inc. is recalling certain 2020-2022 Subaru Legacy and Outback vehicles. A capacitor in the Occupant Detection System (ODS) sensor that controls the front passenger airbag may crack and short circuit during normal operation.

If the ODS sensor fails, the front passenger airbag will not deploy during a crash, significantly increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants. No injuries have been reported related to this defect.

The recall affects approximately 118,723 vehicles across model years 2020-2022. Owners should contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614 to arrange the repair. Dealers will replace the ODS sensors at no charge. Owner notifications were mailed on February 3, 2025.

For additional information, owners may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
