2023-2024 Volvo VN Trucks Recalled for Accelerator Control System Defect

Volvo Trucks is recalling certain 2023-2024 VN trucks because the accelerator pedal position sensor may disconnect, preventing the engine from returning to idle quickly. This can cause loss of vehicle control and increase crash risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a safety-critical defect affecting vehicle acceleration control, which directly increases the risk of crashes. However, no injuries or fatalities have been reported, and the hazard is theoretical rather than manifested. Per the rubric, structural control system defects without reported injuries are scored at most 3.

Plain-English summary

Volvo Trucks North America is recalling certain 2023-2024 VN trucks. The accelerator pedal position sensor may become disconnected, which prevents the engine from returning to idle within 2 seconds. This violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 124 (Accelerator Control Systems).

When the engine does not return to idle quickly enough, the driver loses control of the vehicle speed, increasing the risk of a crash. Approximately 858 vehicles are affected by this recall.

Owners should contact Volvo Trucks customer service at 1-800-528-6586 to have the throttle pedal replaced and vehicle software updated at no charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on February 27, 2024.
