Honda recalls 2023 Civic vehicles with a defective brake modulator that may leak fluid, potentially causing unintended vehicle movement or increased brake pedal travel.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural vehicle defect affecting the brake system, a critical safety component. Although no injuries have been reported, the defect creates significant risk through unintended vehicle movement and brake pedal changes, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2023 Honda Civic vehicles along with 2023 Acura Integra, 2023 Acura RDX, and 2022 Honda Accord models due to a defect in the vehicle stability assist (VSA) brake modulator. A ball valve inside the modulator may leak brake fluid.
When brake fluid leaks, the vehicle can experience unintended movement when the brake hold feature is engaged, or show an unexpected increase in brake pedal travel. Both conditions increase the risk of a crash or injury.
Owners should contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138 to schedule a free replacement of the VSA modulator. Owner notification letters were originally mailed on July 24, 2023. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
