2022-2023 Chevrolet Malibu Recalled for Defective Front Impact Bar Weld

General Motors is recalling certain 2022-2023 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles with improperly welded front impact bars. The structural defect may prevent crash sensors from working correctly, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: Although structural vehicle defects are typically classified as Severe, this recall involves only theoretical risk of harm with no reported injuries, hospitalizations, or deaths. Per the rubric, when a hazard is theoretical and no injuries have been reported, the score is capped at High.

Plain-English summary

General Motors, LLC is recalling certain 2022 and 2023 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles due to a structural defect in the front impact bar. The front impact bar, a structural portion of the vehicle frame, may not be properly welded to the front frame rail.

An improperly welded front impact bar may result in the front crash sensors not performing correctly. This increases the risk of injury in a crash, as the sensors are critical safety components.

GM will inspect the affected vehicles for incomplete welds on both the right-hand and left-hand sides of the vehicle's motor rail. If the defect is identified, the vehicle will be repurchased by GM. Owners were notified by mail in January 2023.
