Nissan is recalling 2021 Versa and Kicks vehicles because an intermittent electrical connection in the power steering torque sensor can disable power steering assist, increasing steering effort and crash risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural vehicle defect affecting the power steering system, a safety-critical component. Loss of power steering assist increases steering difficulty and crash risk. Structural vehicle defects meet the Severe classification per the rubric, even without reported injuries.
Plain-English summary
Nissan North America, Inc. is recalling certain 2021 Nissan Versa and Kicks vehicles due to a defect in the electric power steering (EPS) system.
The vehicles have an intermittent electrical connection issue in the electric power steering torque sensor. This defect can cause the power steering assist to become disabled, leaving drivers without electronic power steering support.
When power steering assist is lost, the steering effort required increases significantly, especially at low speeds. This increased steering difficulty can increase the risk of a crash.
Nissan dealers will inspect the steering column torque sensor lot code and replace the column if necessary at no cost to owners. Owner notification letters were expected to be mailed on November 9, 2022. Owners can contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) for more information.
