Plain-English summary
Nissan North America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2012 Nissan Versa vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. The vehicles were manufactured between June 9, 2011, and January 13, 2012. The recall affects 36,608 vehicles.
The recall is issued because the vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 114 regarding theft protection. Interference between the shifter rod and the shift knob allows the vehicle to be shifted out of the park position without the driver depressing the brake pedal. This defect increases the risk of a crash or injury to a nearby pedestrian if the vehicle is inadvertently shifted into gear.
Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the shifter knob or the shifter assembly as needed, free of charge. The safety recall began on March 5, 2012. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
