2022 Freightliner Cascadia Brake System Fault Code Storage Defect
Daimler Trucks North America is recalling 2022 Freightliner Cascadia trucks because their anti-lock brake systems don't store fault codes when the vehicle is turned off for more than 5 seconds. This impairs diagnostic features and may increase crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural safety defect in a critical brake system component that fails federal safety standards. However, no crashes, injuries, or property damage are reported in the source, and the potential harm remains theoretical. Per the severity rubric, risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported receive a High rating.
Plain-English summary
Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2022 Freightliner Cascadia commercial trucks due to a defect in the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) module. The ABS will not store fault codes when the vehicle is keyed off for more than 5 seconds, which impairs diagnostic features and prevents the warning light from functioning properly.
The vehicle fails to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 121 (Air Brake Systems) because the ABS cannot properly record diagnostic information. An ABS system that does not store fault codes may fail to warn the driver of an issue or prevent proper repair, increasing the risk of a crash.
Approximately 17 vehicles are affected by this recall. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 28, 2024. Owners should contact Daimler Trucks North America customer service at 1-800-547-0712 to arrange for their vehicle to be repurchased.
