2022 Kenworth T180 ABS warning light malfunction recall
PACCAR is recalling certain 2022 Kenworth T180 and 2023 Kenworth T280 and Peterbilt 535 vehicles because the ABS warning light may not illuminate during an ABS malfunction, potentially increasing crash risk. Dealers will provide a free software update.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a real defect in a safety-critical brake system component (ABS warning light), but no injuries or deaths have been reported. The risk of harm—potential crashes from unnotified ABS malfunctions—is theoretical. Per the rubric, risk-of-harm products where injury has not been reported are rated High (3).
Plain-English summary
PACCAR Incorporated is recalling certain 2022 Kenworth T180 and 2023 Kenworth T280 and Peterbilt 535 vehicles. The ABS (antilock brake system) telltale warning light was not enabled on certain vehicles and will not illuminate even if an ABS malfunction occurs. This fails to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 105 requirements for brake systems.
When the ABS warning light does not function, drivers will not be notified if an ABS malfunction occurs. This increases the risk of a crash because the driver may be unaware that the ABS system is not operating properly.
Owners of affected vehicles should contact PACCAR customer service at 1-425-828-5888 (Kenworth) or 1-940-591-4220 (Peterbilt) to schedule a free software update. Owner notification letters were mailed December 9, 2022. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for additional information.
