What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall addresses a vehicle safety system failure affecting hazard lights without reported injuries or fatalities. The hazard presents a theoretical risk of increased crash severity and driver distraction, meeting the High (Score 3) criterion for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
PACCAR Incorporated is recalling certain Kenworth and Peterbilt commercial trucks from model years 2023-2026 due to a faulty exterior lighting switch. The switch may fail, preventing hazard lights from functioning and disabling the ability to adjust instrument panel display brightness.
Without functioning hazard lights, drivers cannot alert other road users to an emergency or disabled vehicle, increasing crash risk. Additionally, reduced control over instrument panel brightness can make critical safety information difficult to read or create driver distraction.
The recall affects 5,378 vehicles across multiple models: Kenworth T180, T280, T380, and T480; and Peterbilt 535, 536, 537, 548, and 567. Affected model years range from 2023 to 2026. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 26, 2025.
Dealers will update the vehicle cab controller unit (VECU) software at no cost. Owners can temporarily reset a non-responsive switch by cycling the vehicle key while a permanent fix is arranged. Contact Kenworth customer service at 1-425-828-5888 or Peterbilt customer service at 1-940-591-4220 for service scheduling.
