Kenworth and Peterbilt lighting switch failure disables hazard lights
PACCAR is recalling certain 2023-2026 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks because the exterior lighting switch may fail, leaving the hazard lights and instrument backlight brightness adjustment inoperative.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: Rubric level 3 covers risk-of-harm where injury has not yet been reported: signalling and display functions are affected while the truck retains control and propulsion, and a key cycle can temporarily restore the switch.
Plain-English summary
PACCAR Incorporated is recalling certain 2025 Kenworth T180 and Peterbilt 535 and 567, 2025-2026 Kenworth T280, 2023-2026 Kenworth T380, 2024-2026 Kenworth T480, and 2024-2026 Peterbilt 536, 537 and 548 trucks. About 5,378 units are potentially affected.
The exterior lighting switch may fail, resulting in the hazard lights and the instrument display back-light brightness adjustment not functioning. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 101, "Control and Displays", and 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices and Associated Equipment".
NHTSA states that inoperative hazard lights cannot alert other drivers as intended, and that the inability to adjust instrument panel brightness can make critical safety information difficult to see or distract the driver.
Dealers will update the vehicle cab controller unit software free of charge. Owners are advised that a non-responsive switch can be temporarily reset by a key cycle. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 26, 2025. Owners may contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
