2022 Rivian R1T front passenger seat airbag may not deactivate for children
Certain 2022 Rivian R1T vehicles have a malfunctioning occupant classification system that fails to deactivate the front passenger airbag when a child or child seat is present, increasing injury risk during a crash.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a real defect in a vehicle safety system affecting a vulnerable population (children), violating Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208. However, no injuries or deaths have been reported. The injury consequence is based on potential crash deployment rather than actual harm, placing this in the "High" category for risk-of-harm products without reported injury.
Plain-English summary
Rivian Automotive is recalling certain 2022 R1T vehicles due to a defect in the Occupant Classification System. The OCS may fail to deactivate the front passenger airbag when a child or child seat occupies the front passenger seat. These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 (Occupant Crash Protection).
As a result, a child in the front seat may be at greater risk of injury in the event of a passenger airbag deployment during a crash.
Rivian Service Centers will replace the front passenger seat at no charge. Owner notification letters were sent beginning July 6, 2022. Owners should contact Rivian customer service at 1-734-855-4345 to schedule service. Additional information is available from the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
