2020-2021 Tesla Model 3: Swapped Camera Terminals Impair Collision Detection
Tesla recalls 2020-2021 Model 3 and 2021 Model Y vehicles due to incorrectly installed camera cable terminals that cause swapped camera views, impairing collision detection and automatic emergency braking.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a safety-critical vehicle defect affecting automatic emergency braking and collision avoidance systems. However, no injuries or crashes have been reported; the increased risk of harm is potential rather than actualized.
Plain-English summary
Tesla, Inc. is recalling certain 2020-2021 Model 3 and 2021 Model Y vehicles. The fisheye and narrow camera cable terminals were incorrectly installed in the cable harness connector, resulting in swapped camera views.
The swapped camera views prevent the vehicles' cameras from properly detecting crossing objects and high-curvature lane lines. This impairs the performance of Autosteer and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) systems, increasing the risk of a crash.
If you own one of these vehicles, contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752 to schedule service. Tesla will correct the swapped terminals and recalibrate the cameras at no charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 8, 2022.
You may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov. Tesla's reference number for this recall is SB-22-17-007.
