Volkswagen is recalling certain Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles because corroded electrical contacts in the front door wiring harness may delay airbag deployment during side impacts, increasing the risk of injury.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This recall addresses a structural vehicle safety system defect involving airbag deployment. Since no injuries or deaths are reported and the hazard is theoretical rather than actual, per the rubric the maximum severity is High.

Plain-English summary

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is recalling certain 2019-2020 Atlas, 2020-2023 Atlas Cross Sport, and 2021-2023 Atlas FL vehicles. The electrical contacts in the front door wiring harness may corrode, disrupting the electrical connection needed for airbag deployment.

A delayed airbag deployment during a side impact crash increases the risk of injury to vehicle occupants.

Owners should contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 to schedule service. Dealers will secure and, if necessary, replace the affected wiring harnesses free of charge.
