2020 Tesla Model 3 brake caliper bolts may loosen and separate
Tesla is recalling certain 2020 Model 3 vehicles because brake caliper bolts may loosen, causing the caliper to separate and lose tire pressure, increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural brake system defect with potential for serious harm including tire pressure loss and increased crash risk, but no injuries or crashes have been reported. This fits the rubric criterion for high-severity risk-of-harm products without reported injury.
Plain-English summary
Tesla, Inc. is recalling certain 2020 Model 3 vehicles along with 2019-2021 Model 3 and 2020-2021 Model Y vehicles. The brake caliper bolts may be loose, which could allow the brake caliper to separate from its housing and contact the wheel rim.
When the caliper contacts the rim, it may cause a loss of tire pressure. This loss of pressure increases the risk of a crash.
Tesla Service will inspect and tighten or replace the caliper bolts at no charge to owners. Owner notification letters were sent on July 23, 2021. Owners can contact Tesla customer service online at www.tesla.com/support/contact or by calling 1-877-79-TESLA (1-877-798-3752). The NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline is available at 1-888-327-4236.
