What this means for you

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (suspension component detachment) that explicitly increases the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Tesla, Inc. is recalling certain 2020 Model Y vehicles due to a defect in the front suspension system. The bolts connecting the front upper control arm and the steering knuckle may not have been properly tightened. This condition allows the upper control arm to detach from the steering knuckle.
A detached upper control arm can cause the wheels to lean in or out, which decreases the driver's ability to steer and increases the risk of a crash. The recall began on January 15, 2021.
Tesla will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and tighten the bolts as necessary, free of charge. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla's number for this recall is SB-20-31-012. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
