What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle electrical defect that directly causes engine stall risk and increases crash hazard. As a structural vehicle defect, it meets the rubric criterion for Severe classification regardless of whether injuries have been reported.
Plain-English summary
Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling approximately 5,111 Western Star 4700 and 5700 vehicles from model years 2019 through 2021. The ground harness wiring in these vehicles may be undersized.
Due to the undersized wiring, the harness connector may melt. If the connector melts, it may cause the engine to stall unexpectedly while driving.
An engine stall increases the risk of a vehicle crash. DTNA will notify vehicle owners, and dealers will replace the ground harness free of charge. The recall is expected to begin May 22, 2021. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
