Newmar motorhomes recalled for steering gear bolts backing out

Newmar is recalling 2020-2022 motorhomes due to steering gear mounting bolts that may back out, potentially causing loss of steering control. Owners should contact Newmar for a free replacement of affected bolts.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a structural steering defect where bolts backing out can cause loss of steering control and increase crash risk. However, no injuries or fatalities have been reported, making this a high-risk hazard without reported harm.

Plain-English summary

Newmar Corporation is recalling certain 2020-2022 motorhomes including the Dutch Star, King Aire, Essex, London Aire, and Mountain Aire models. The steering gear mounting bolts on these vehicles may become loose and back out.

Loose and detached steering gear mounting bolts can result in difficulty steering or complete loss of steering control in both directions. This increases the risk of a crash.

To remedy this issue, dealers will replace the steering gear mounting bolts and washers free of charge, with repairs expected to begin April 19, 2021. Owners should contact Newmar customer service at 1-800-731-8300 to schedule service. The NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline (1-888-327-4236) is also available for additional information.
