Newmar motorhomes recalled for loose steering column bolt
Newmar is recalling 1,277 of its 2021 and 2022 motorhomes because the steering column bolt may not be properly tightened, potentially causing loss of steering control. Owners should contact dealers for free inspection and tightening.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall affects a critical structural component—the steering column fastener—whose failure results in loss of steering control. Although no injuries have been reported, the potential consequence directly increases crash risk, meeting the criterion for a structural vehicle defect.
Plain-English summary
Newmar Corporation is recalling 1,277 of its 2021 and 2022 motorhomes across eight models: New Aire, Essex, King Aire, Ventana, Kountry Star, London Aire, Dutch Star, and Mountain Aire. The upper bolt connecting the steering column may not have been properly tightened during manufacturing, which could cause the nut to loosen off the bolt.
A loose or detached steering column bolt could result in loss of steering control. Loss of steering control significantly increases the risk of a crash and poses a serious safety hazard.
Owners received notification letters mailed on May 16, 2022. Dealers will inspect and tighten the upper and lower steering column bolts as necessary at no charge to the owner. Owners can contact Newmar's customer service at 1-800-731-8300 to schedule service, or contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for additional information.
