Certain 2020-2021 BMW X5, X6, X7 models: suspension weld separation

What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural defect in the vehicle's front suspension system where a critical weld may separate. Although no injuries have been reported, the potential failure of the weld could compromise vehicle handling and control, significantly increasing the risk of a crash. The structural nature of this suspension defect meets the rubric's criterion for Severe severity.
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2020 BMW X5, X6, and X7 models, as well as certain 2021 BMW X5 models. The front axle support contains a weld that joins it to the right front control arm bearing bracket. In some vehicles, this weld may separate.
If the weld separates, the connection between the front axle support and the control arm bearing bracket fails. This compromises vehicle handling and control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Owners of affected vehicles should contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 to schedule a service appointment. BMW dealers will replace the front axle support at no cost to the owner. The recall remediation began on December 18, 2020. Owners can also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.safercar.gov for additional information.
