BMW Recalls Motorcycles Due to Front Brake Caliper Fluid Leaks
BMW is recalling specific 2019-2020 motorcycles because front brake calipers may leak fluid, potentially reducing brake performance and increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (brake system failure) that explicitly increases the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2019-2020 R 1250 GS, R 1250 GS Adventure, and R 1250 RT motorcycles, as well as 2020 S 1000 RR and S 1000 XR models. The recall involves 9,392 vehicles. The defect is that the front brake calipers may leak brake fluid when the motorcycle is parked.
Over time, this leak can reduce the amount of brake fluid in the reservoir. Low fluid volume could affect brake performance, which increases the risk of a crash. These motorcycles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 122, "Motorcycle Brake Systems."
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the front brake calipers with an improved version at no charge. The recall began on March 8, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
