2021 BMW Motorcycles Recalled for Detachable Tire Pressure Labels
BMW is recalling 2021 R 1250 motorcycles (R, RT, RS, GS models) because tire pressure labels may detach from the frame. Without proper tire pressure information readily available, riders risk improper tire inflation, affecting handling and control.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a component failure (tire pressure label detachment) that prevents access to critical safety information. While no injuries or illnesses have been reported, the hazard is risk-of-harm: improper tire pressure could affect motorcycle handling and control, increasing crash risk.
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America is recalling approximately 447 motorcycles manufactured in 2021. The affected models are the R 1250 R, R 1250 RT, R 1250 RS, R 1250 GS, and R 1250 GS Adventure. These motorcycles have tire pressure labels that may not remain properly affixed to the motorcycle frame.
According to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 120 (Wheels and Rims), proper tire pressure information must be available to vehicle operators. If the label detaches, riders will lack immediate access to the correct tire pressures. This could result in riders improperly inflating their tires, which may negatively affect motorcycle handling and control, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
BMW dealers will replace the tire pressure label free of charge. Owners should contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 to arrange service. The recall remedy began on October 19, 2020. For additional information, you may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.safercar.gov.
