What this means for you

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (electrical wiring) that poses a significant risk of fire, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2017-2020 Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV). The recall addresses a defect where the 12-volt isolator post located behind the driver's seat may develop high resistance. This high-resistance electrical connection can result in overheating, which increases the risk of a fire while the vehicle is on or off.

The recall began on July 30, 2020. FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform an interim inspection of the affected joint. If the inspection indicates the joint is compromised, owners will receive a loaner vehicle until a final remedy is developed. The final corrective action involves increasing the torque and installing a waterproof gasket to the 12-volt isolator post, along with inspecting the post for contamination. If the post is compromised, it and the associated cables will be replaced.

Until the final repair is completed, consumers are advised to exercise specific precautions. Owners should not park these vehicles inside buildings or structures, or near other vehicles. Additionally, owners should keep liquids out of the backseat area, including beverages, wet items, umbrellas, or bottled liquids that may leak. Owners may contact FCA US LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
