Vac-Tron Vacuum Excavator Trailers Recalled for Rear Impact Protection Defect

Vac-Tron is recalling 2016-2020 vacuum excavator trailers because the rear extends too far, reducing impact protection and increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the rear impact protection is insufficient, creating a risk of serious injury or death in a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects.

Plain-English summary

Vac-Tron Equipment, LLC is recalling certain 2016-2020 CS500DT, CS570GT, CS573GT, CS800DT, CS800GT, CS1270GT, CS1270SGT, and CS1273GT Vacuum Excavator trailers. The recall involves 110 units. The defect is that the rear most extremity extends too far beyond the rear of the trailer frame, which reduces impact protection and causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 224, "Rear Impact Protection."

In the event of a rear impact crash, the other vehicle can travel under the rear of the vacuum excavator, increasing the risk of serious injury or death to someone in the other vehicle.

The recall began July 14, 2020. Vermeer dealers will install remedy kits provided by Vac-Tron, free of charge. Owners may contact Vac-Tron customer service at 1-888-822-8766 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
