Mercedes-Benz Recalls 2019 GLC Models for Incorrect Air Bag Labels
Mercedes-Benz is recalling 2019 GLC models because passenger-side sun visors may have air bag warning labels in a foreign language, potentially obscuring safety risks.
What this means for you
Minor labeling or packaging issue, or a voluntary precautionary recall. Risk of harm is low but real — follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Our severity reasoning: The recall addresses a labeling error that obscures safety information, which fits the rubric criterion for 'Minor labeling errors' and 'voluntary precautionary recalls' where no direct mechanical defect or reported injury is present.
Plain-English summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. is recalling certain 2019 model year GLC 300 4MATIC coupe, AMG GLC 43 Coupe, AMG GLC 43, AMG GLC 63, GLC 300, GLC 350e 4MATIC, GLC300 4MATIC, AMG GLC 63 Coupe, and AMG GLC 63 S Coupe vehicles. The recall involves 10,041 vehicles where the passenger side sun visor may have incorrect air bag warning labels written in a foreign language. This condition causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
The presence of foreign language labels may prevent occupants from understanding the risks associated with children sitting in the front seat. This lack of clear information increases the risk of injury in the event of a crash. The defect is classified as a labeling issue rather than a mechanical failure of the air bag system itself.
Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the air bag warnings and replace them as necessary at no charge. The recall began on March 3, 2020. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.
