What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the service brake air system that could lead to a sudden loss of air and an increased risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Custom Fire Apparatus, Inc. is recalling certain 2002-2019 Pumpers, Tankers, and Rescue vehicles built on a Spartan Motors chassis. The recall involves 57 units where the service brake air reservoir system may not be pressure protected where the control line for the automatic tire chain system is connected.
If the control line is cut, the service brake air system may suddenly lose air, which increases the risk of a crash. This defect affects the safety of the vehicle's braking system.
Spartan will notify Custom Fire owners. Dealers will inspect the routing of the control lines and reroute them into the auxiliary air reservoir as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on November 15, 2019. Owners may contact Custom Fire customer service at 1-715-294-2555 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
