Custom Fire Spartan Emergency Vehicles Recalled for Fuel Rail Leak

Custom Fire is recalling 2017-2021 Spartan emergency vehicles because a fuel rail leak could cause a fire.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (fuel rail leak) that creates a risk of fire, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating.

Plain-English summary

Custom Fire Apparatus, Inc. is recalling certain 2017-2021 Spartan Gladiator, MetroStar, and MetroStarX emergency vehicles equipped with Cummins L9 diesel engines. The recall involves 48 vehicles.

The sealing washer in these vehicles may not seat correctly in the pilot boreholes, which allows the high-pressure fuel rail assembly to leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Cummins will inspect the rail threads and fuel lines, and replace the rail as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 8, 2021. Owners may contact Custom Fire's customer service at 1-715-294-2555 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
