Plain-English summary
Subaru of America, Inc. is recalling certain 2018 Legacy, Outback, and BRZ vehicles due to a software issue in the audio display system. This defect may cause the system to fail to initialize, resulting in a blank camera display. Consequently, the rearview image will not appear while the vehicle is being backed up.
The recall affects 71,190 vehicles. The defect causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors." The failure to display the rearview image while backing up increases the risk of a crash.
Dealers will reprogram the audio system display software free of charge to correct the issue. The recall began on February 5, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
