Coach and Equipment is recalling 864 transit buses because foldaway seats may not lock properly, increasing injury risk in crashes.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where seats may fail to lock during a crash, leading to an increased risk of injury, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects and significant injury reports.

Plain-English summary

Coach and Equipment Mfg Corp. is recalling certain 2015-2018 Phoenix and Metro Lite transit buses. The recall involves 864 vehicles equipped with specific Freedman GO-ES Foldaway Seats (part numbers 43705, 45467, 48923, and 75719).

The defect occurs when the back seat cushion is rotated from the stowed position to the upright position. In this configuration, the seat cushion may not remain locked into place when under load, such as during a crash or a sudden stop. If the seat back moves during a crash, the occupant has an increased risk of injury.

The recall began on November 26, 2018. Coach and Equipment has notified owners, and Freedman Seating will repair the foldaway seats free of charge. Owners may contact Coach and Equipment customer service at 1-800-724-8464 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
